Sapphire Stars Final Clue #5!

Well Scrappy Quilters!

It is time for the fifth and final clue in our "Sapphire Stars" mystery quilt!

If you have made it this far, you might as well keep on going and finish this quilt top!
Not to mention, quilt, bind, and label it!

This clue comes from a spirit of scrappiness, and as you all know, my personal goal is to make a quilt as scrappy as possible.  With this in mind, this is how I personally worked this clue.  If you know of a more simple way that is up to you.  I only ask one thing, don't bash the scrappy quilter here! LOL
I am an unpaid quilter that is only wishing to share his passion with his fellow artists.

Keeping it as simple as possible.....

Here we go!

For this clue you will need:

12 Red (All shades of red) 6.5" Squares
12 Yellow (All shades of yellow) 6.5" Squares

24 6 7/8" Neutral Squares

We will also need our
24 light blue 1.5" x 6.5" strips
and
24 bright blue 1.5" x 6.5" strips
These were cut in clue #3.
(If you haven't cut these strips yet, just cut them now....
we will wait for you.....LOL)

Let's begin!

Take your red and yellow squares and cut them
twice on the diagonal.
(Yellow squares not pictured.)

Like this........

You will now have a total of
48 Red quarter square triangles
and
48 Yellow quarter square triangles

Next....

Bring out those 1.5 x 6.5 strips of light and bright blues

Pair the light blue strips with the red triangles
like this.

Pair the bright blue strips with the yellow triangles
like this.
MAKE SURE the bottom remains even
 as pictured in the photos.
We want that tall tip at the top.

We will be sewing these units just like this.
Please don't worry about that strip being a little longer
than the top of the triangles.....we will take care of that later.

Sew the strips to one side.....
Press toward the strip.
(For both red and yellow triangles)

Here is a view from the reverse side
of some of the yellow triangles.
(Do this for both red and yellow triangles.)

We are half way there with this part.
Lay the other quarter square triangles on
the other side just like this.

Sew another quarter square triangle
to the other side of the strip.
Make sure you have the triangle positioned
correctly.
(Do this for both red and yellow triangles.)

Once again, press toward the strip.
Here is a reverse side view to help you.

Hmmm.....what should we call these at this point???
Dragonfly units???  Broom units????
LOLOLOLOL
We aren't quite done yet......

Take these units to your cutting table.
Line them up as best as possible on your lines like this......
the lines are used simply for reference marks.

Now place a ruler that has a diagonal line
on top of the unit.  Refer to the photo above.
We are going to trim that extra strip off.

Do this to both the yellow and red triangle units.

Chop!  Chop!
Just like that!
I added some length to the strip because I wanted
to allow some room for error for myself.
It DOES NOT bother me that the extra is waste.
Truth be told, not all of my strips are "perfectly" centered.
Please do NOT report this to the quilting police????? LOL

Pretty simple, right?
I am SURE this can be made as one block
and cut down the center.....but, as I said before,
I want my quilts to be as scrappy as possible and
ALL of my yellows, reds, and both shades of
blues are different.
I did this by using one quarter square triangle
as a template for cutting the rest from
various red and yellow scraps of fabric.
I know.......call me crazy!
You won't be the first that has! LOLOL

Are we done??????
Not quite yet......
We need to add something to these!

We need to add another side to these units we just made.....
you can use a variety of tools to get that other side
cut appropriately.

I chose to use the easy angle ruler to get mine cut.
and you know why........variety, variety, variety
of neutrals! LOL

However, if you cut a 6 7/8" square of neutral
on the diagonal once, that will work out just fine.

24: 6 7/8" squares of neutral
cut once on the diagonal will yield
the 48 half squares of neutral we need to
complete this last unit.

Align your yellow units with a neutral......
they will only fit one way....
and chain piece them through the machine.
Do the same with your red units.

I do finger(nail) press because I feel it gets the
crease down to the thread
where it needs to be when pressing with an iron.
Press toward the yellow and red, away from the neutral.
This may seem wrong to you, but, it
will help with nesting seams in the final assembly of
the quilt top.

You should now have:
24 yellow half square triangles
and
24 red half square triangles.
Trim to 6.5" squares.
I did not have to trim much at all.

I just had to lay out some units to see what they
would look like.......and
I think I may have to make a quilt like this some day!

There you have it!
I am going to give you all a day or two to
chomp away at this clue.
Also, it's a nice feeling keeping you
in suspense.
LOLOLOLOL

I promise to share with you all
the last steps of this mystery in a few days.
Get this unit made so you can
join in the final reveal of....

Ahhhhhh September.........

30 Days has September...........and they are almost gone!

Come see how this month got away from me so quickly!

September is my birthday month!
It was the 14th anniversary of my
29th birthday, thank you for asking......LOL!
That means spending time with my amazing family!

My Dad........whatta ham!
He HATED peeling potatoes in the National Guard,
but, doesn't mind helping out Mom in the kitchen when needed.

And you all KNOW my Momma was going to
cook my favorite meal of Stuffed Peppers
with some Fried Potatoes on the side!
I had a wonderful time celebrating with my family.
And, in case you were wondering....she made me
a sugar free birthday cake as well!

My sis and her family made me this pallet flag!
I can't wait to hang it and decorate for Fall around it!

I! LOVE! MY! FAMILY!

Although Wendy of The Constant Quilter
didn't know it was my birthday month....
she "passed along" these DELICIOUS
Civil War Repro fabrics to me!
YUMMY!
Thanks so much Wendy!
I actually remembered to take a photo!
I am still apologizing to Mari of
for not taking a photo of the scraps
she sent to me!  SORRY!!!!

These Civil War Repro scraps fit right into
sew along.
Above is Part ONE.......

and here is Part TWO.

I have had a few more workshops in my studio.
This one is "Sorta, Kinda Amish."

These quilters worked so hard getting their string sets made.

Then played with their placements on the design wall......

and the design table! LOL

It's a really fun workshop using a different
technique to use up those strings.

I was also able to have my good quilting friends
Ree and Linda over for a Quilts of Valor sew day
in the studio.

Wait a minute....where did everybody go?????

Oh.....LOL!
You know there is always going to be good food
around if there are quilters working in
The Quilt Cave!

We were able to get this quilt top done.
Sorry for the waviness at the bottom.....
the fan was on! LOL
Super easy 2.5" squares surrounding
a 6.5" larger square.
Our suggestion to you......
piece each block individually rather than
trying to strip piece it!
Trust us on this!!!!! LOLOLOL
And, yes, there is a mistake in this quilt top
that shall add to it's provenance!

What a great time we all had!
And, yes, Little Miss Hollywood,
AKA, Dar, joined us for the day!

Amidst flying very rude passengers on the plane,
taking care of the birds here at The Quilt Cave,
and all of these activities, I have kept myself very busy!
No wonder September has gone by so quickly!

Oh......and guess what is happening this Thursday,
the 28th?????

Another clue for Sapphire Stars!!!!!
YIPPEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

is your PDF for the last SURPRISE CLUE.

We are ALMOST finished!!!!!
See you then!

Thanks for all of the encouragement!
Keep on quilting!
Kevin

FUN! FUN! FUN!

How's that surprise clue coming along Scrap Quilters????

I hope you all are enjoying the process of going through your scraps and stash
while making something that I hope you all find as wonderful as I do?

Have you figured this mystery out yet?  I have heard from a few of you from near and far
expressing your frustration confusion.................isn't that what a mystery is all about?? LOL

When I have played along with mysteries, I have always tried to figure it out to no avail.
That's when it's a good mystery!

The Eclectic Abuela has been playing along and sharing her "Ruby Stars" version, and I can't wait
to see how this turns out!  She has even dedicated some pieces in the quilt to me...in the form of chicken fabric! LOLOLOL  Sharon at Vroomans Quilts expressed that she enjoyed working with the smaller pieces with this latest clue.  I have to agree Sharon.....I love working with tiny pieces......but, then again, I like working with medium and larger pieces...............OHHHHHHHHHHHH
who am I kidding here, I LOVE working with ALL sizes of scraps! LOLOLOLOL  But, I especially feel good when I am able to utilize every last inch of a scrap.  And, I can honestly say I have done a lot of that with my personal version of Sapphire Stars.

In other news...........

Have you thought about having me host a workshop with a quilt group or guild you belong to?  I have thoroughly been enjoying hosting workshops here in my personal studio, The Quilt Cave. However, I have a sewing machine, and will travel!  Please do not hesitate to contact me for various workshops and prices.  They are always FUN! FUN! FUN!

"Crazy Crumb Stars"

This is one of my most favorite and FUN workshops to host.

Seeing the students have "aha" moments with some
brainless sewing does my heart good!

A nice lunch prepared with eggs from my chickies
is included here at the Quilt Cave!

It's a blessing to have a large design wall so students can
play with their recently made blocks.

"Selfie" time quilters!
I sure do appreciate the help of Miss Hollywood
in the back wearing sunglasses
aka
She has offered to assist with classes here.

Class size is limited here at the Quilt Cave,
however,
the FUN is not!

And you can usually find me on the couch with
Lilly Mae snoozing after so much FUN has been had
with quilters in my studio space.

I have received several requests to show some of
my poultry flock, so I am going to try to start
doing some videos featuring the guys and gals
of the coop.
They are so entertaining, and bless me with
delicious eggs.
Please enjoy the short video below!

Chickens at the Quilt Cave!

At this point, I would love to make a shout out to
Mari,
who graciously sent me a box of
mouth watering scraps!
My most sincere apologies for not getting a photo.....
I dug into them too quickly!
THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!
Mari has an excellent tutorial on scrap organization

In closing......I have to share a story that happened recently.

I continue to believe that Quilters are some of the most
benevolent beings on this earth.

By a chance encounter between a neighbor of mine up the road and
students that got turned around while trying to find the Quilt Cave,
I made a new quilting friend, and received an
amazing gift.

Meet Sue, my quilting neighbor I didn't know I had!
Look at her beautiful quilt hanging behind us!

When the students stopped by Sue's home, thinking it was mine,
they met Sue, and found out that she is a quilter!
Sue happened to be looking for a quilter that would
be interested in................

ALL! OF! THIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
The binders contain HUNDREDS of magazines
organized by date and year!!!!!
There is a standing hoop frame, as well as
a superabundance of various quilting books!

My students told her about me,
so, her son in law, Brett, looked me up via my blog
and contacted me!
LOLOLOLOL
Isn't that something????
So cool!

All of the magazines are magnificently pristine
in these binders marked by year and date.

Thanks to Sue, I will be able to read while I fly
for a long time to come!
I am looking forward to a visit from Sue
here at the Quilt Cave!
#blessed
Thanks so much Sue for your generous offering!
There will be no lack of inspiration around here now!

And to all of my Florida friends......
please remain safe in the midst of Hurricane Irma!
Prayers to all of you, as well as my Texas and Louisiana friends!

Thanks for all of the encouragement!
Keep on Quilting!
