Movin' out......

What do you all think of this photo?
Aside from "salida" which means "exit" coming out the side of my head......

A flight attendant friend took this photo for me before our day started, mainly because she was in disbelief that I travel with a sewing machine.  But, I kind of liked it, and it sums up....well, most of my life!  And for those of you who are going to ask, "Can you use your sewing machine while flying?"......the answer is: OF COURSE NOT!  First off, I would be fired for doing things other than my normal flight attendant duties, and second, there are no power sources aboard our aircraft that would allow me to plug in Miss Bev.

I have to apologize here...........

I know it has been over a week since my last post, but......

After you see some of the following photos in this post, hopefully, you will forgive me..........

Lord have mercy!  I never realized I had kept so much stuff throughout my life!

My first adventure in garment sewing thanks to Home Economics........
Circa 1987
Notice the animals going the wrong way?

My first temporary tags and brochure from my first brand new car....
Circa 1995
I always thought I would keep this first new car didn't happen.

Love letters from my high school girlfriend Leah, who lived 2 hours from me.
Circa 1990-1992

Notes passed in the hall during Middle School!?!?!?!
Circa 1985-1988
Ummm....I really don't care if Missy and Chuck made bad grades on
their earth science tests anymore?

Quilting Design Doodling in Chemistry Class
Circa 1990
Even then I was thinking of textures!

Am I a sentimental sap or what????
It actually has felt really good purging a lot of this stuff during my move.
I have kept a handful of goodies that my niece and nephew can
throw in the trash pile after I am gone, but, hopefully they will at least
get a good chuckle out of them?

I have been blessed by some very good friends to have a
"home in transition" until I find my next house.
You know who you are, and I am beyond thankful for all of the kindnesses
you have bestowed upon me!

In the meantime........

Many thanks to my friends Bev and Joanie who made a ton of binding from 3 donated jelly rolls
from the QOV block drive.......these will be used up in no time...

Quilts of Valor are being quilted and completed for the upcoming presentations in Kansas City!

November 12th

in the morning,

and the

in the evening.

Clue #4 has come out for my friend Ann's

Mystery Quilt

I plugged away on this clue while laying over in Boston last week.

In between packing and moving, I needed a couple hour break one day to regroup.
I found a new to me antique mall, and I felt as though I
was being given a helping hand.....or hands.....

Throw your hands up in the air!!!!
Well, better not throw these hands in the air!!!!
They may break!

Other sites I saw at the antique mall.....

Not sure if these are actually "madder red" prints, but, that is what was
advertised on this quilt top.

Humming birds are making a comeback!

This quilt was visually stunning!
I loved the colors and make-do attitude of it, but,
at almost $200, it was way out of budget for me.
Sorry it is so out of focus!

This handy dandy travel iron DID come home with me!
It works beautifully!
I thought of you Randy!  LOL
It is perfect for taking along with me when I travel!

Friends, Family, and Quilters........
This blog may be a little bare over the next few weeks as my move is going to take up a lot of my time.  Please don't leave me!  I must be out of this house by November 5th.  I am also going to the International Quilt Festival in Houston Oct 28th - Nov 1st.  I hope to see many of you there?  If by chance you are there, and you recognize me.....don't hesitate to come introduce yourself to me!

As always,
Thanks for ALL of the encouragement!
Kevin the Quilter

  1. Thanks, Kevin. I LOVE that iron!!! VBG So glad you were able to find something during your layover in Boston. What restraint to only get an iron.
Sounds like you've lived in that house for a long time! I think getting rid of stuff is a good thing. Mind you, I talk a good game. I've lived in my house for 25 yrs and can't believe how much stuff we have accumulated. UGH.
Hope you'll get to sew while you're in transit; and that you find the perfect house in the perfect location. It's a fun time in your life!!
Why don't you come to PIQF this weekend in Santa Clara? Southwest flies into SJ and I'm happy to pick you up! It's a great show and quite a bit more manageable than Houston (I say with envy).

  2. Ah, I don't envy you packing up your house, but, oh, to go to Houston, that where the little green monster comes out ;-)

  3. If you were closer I would help you pack and move!! Done that a few times with my daughters :) Have a blast in Houston...wish I could be there with ya, but I'm chained to my longarm!!! Yeah, haven't touched it in 2 weeks...between the wedding and visiting my dad :)

  4. Have fun! I absolutely love the photo of you with Bev on the plane. Good luck with the house hunting!

  5. I lOVE the photo on the plane. Your featherweight looks tiny. Oh my, you are a saver! lol
I love to browse an antique mall - wish we could do it together. That would be a riot.
    Enjoy your upcoming presentations!!

  6. Don't worry Kevin...we won't leave you !! Me in fact because you make me laugh a lot !!
The photo with you is very cute and your FW too !!
Thank you for all the photos you shared with us (the antique quilts are awesome !!)
I wish you a wonderful time in Houston ! I hope you will meet lots of quilters ! Lucky you !!

  7. We'll never leave you! I love your whimsical posts. Glad to hear all is going well with the move. My daughter just helped us clean out our barn and threw away many of her old junior high notes as well. Too funny! Have a great time in Houston!!

  8. Love, love, love the photo of you and Bev!! Congrats on the sale of your house and good luck in your search for the perfect property, you will find it :) Purging, feels SO good doesn't it? Like loosing weight without exercising LOL

Have a great time in Houston! If I were going, I'd have to hunt you down ;) Don't worry about your peeps hanging in with you, reading your blog posts(no matter how frequent) is always a highlight of my day!

  9. Purging is never easy for me yet I can see why you purged what you did. I love that you travel with your Featherweight and now iron. Great way to spend your layover times sewing. Good luck with your move. QOV Bliss...

  10. Good luck with your purging and packing. Moving is never fun. Love the shorts, very colorful. It's funny what you find when you move. Enjoy the quilt festival.

  11. Great photo of you with your featherweight!
It's a hard thing to move... so much to deal with.
    Hope all goes well!

  12. Purging is a good thing! One of the side effects of moving is realizing the amount of "stuff" you have.

  13. You are so much like my youngest son. I'm still packing up his stuff, from what is now my sewing room (Valentines from 4th grade, etc). I promised him I wouldn't throw any of it away. I know he will regret that, once he has to go thru all of it on day. Till then, my basement will be FULL. Enjoy the memories.

  14. Good luck with the move...having moved just a couple months ago (and every two years before that!), I completely understand your absence! Glad you have some fun things, like Houston, thrown in to keep things exciting!

  15. I think purging is good for the soul. Good for you. The antique shop looks amazing!

  16. Hi Kevin. I love seeing the goodies you are finding during your packing. I tossed a lot, and made a lot of trips to Goodwill and am getting the feeling I should do some sorting again. I swear someone comes here in the night and hides this stuff for me to find. Glad your house sold so you can find your new place. Take care and do stop for some fun!
