Grand Illusion Clue #4........Gittn'R'Done...........

I would like to wish each and every one of you a JOYous Christmas!

How does this time of year sneak upon us so quickly?  I cannot wrap my mind around the fact that it seems like it took ages for Christmas to come when I was a child, and now, it seems like only yesterday we were celebrating Christmas and making Celtic Solstice?!?!?!?

None the less.....I do feel somewhat caught up these last few days before Christmas!

Bonnie shared with us clue #4 for her "Grand Illusion" mystery.  Those 80 half square triangles made from clue #1 truly did help make this weeks clue for more broken dish variations a little easier!

Here are all of the clues plus the bonus half square triangles thus far.

Linking up with Bonnie's Mystery Monday Link Up Part 4!

Valentino's favorite spot this time of year!

I honestly have been playing all year long with the RSC14 hosted by SOSCRAPPY.

Here is my "Soul Searching" quilt top to prove it!
"Soul Searching" is a quilt design by Kathy Doughty of Material Obsession.
OK, OK, OK, know the drill around here......
The minute I step foot outside to take photos of a quilt,
You can see it more or less though?  Even with the ripples!
I think I like it though!  I used gray as the final color for the year.

I have also kept up with my modified maverick stars....minus the last 2 gray ones.
Hmmmm.........I wonder what I am going to do with this one????
I may have a trick up my sleeve for these blocks?
Stay tuned........

Linking up with Scraphappy Saturday!

I received these wonderful patriotic scraps from my friend Kathy!
Thank you so much Kathy!  Some of these have already been incorporated into "Grand Illusion!"

I was asked by the Missouri State Quilt Guild to come up with an idea for their donation drive for 2014.  I wanted their donation to be different from the block drive blocks, so we agreed upon this string block quilt!  It is a variation of a basket weave and I love the results! And the guild was so giving!  We have enough blocks to make 5 quilts for Quilts of Valor!  I will share these as they are made after the first of the year.
Thanks Madeline and the Missouri State Quilt Guild!

These little girls love watching Rudolph this time of year!

TA DAH!!!!!!!!
Here is my version of Bonnie's "Blue Ridge Beauty!"
Finally sharing the photo I promised, and you guessed it.......a WIND STORM!
Sorry for the ripples in the middle of the quilt!
You can get the idea of it though!
I love how scrappy it is, the inner border fabric, and the reason I made it!
Remember, this one is going to my cousin who blessed me with our grandma's treadle!

So much fun making this one!

I have seen this one done in various other colors, and I think I will be trying
it in other colors as well!

Merry Christmas to all!

Thanks for all of the encouragement!
Kevin the Quilter

  1. Hugs to you, Kevin, for all you do for our military, your family, and friends. Hope to meet you sometime next year!

  2. Oh my gosh have you been busy Kevin!! I haven't even started on Bonnie's mystery for this week! I love the photo of the girls watching TV and your Blue Ridge......spectacular!!! I don't know how you get so much done all over the country! Merry Christmas!

  3. Your soul searching quilt is just STUNNING. So beautiful! Love the maverick stars too. What great scrap using projects. As for doesn't need anything fancy, maybe just some 2 inch black on black strips to hold the edges together?

  4. I really love the Soul Searching quilt done with dark fabrics for the background.

  5. Your one blog post covers a lot. Soul Searching turned out beautifully. Maybe a scrappy zigzag border, black background and the various colors as the line? It definitely doesn't need much, Angela's suggestion might be more appropriate. Blue Ridge Beauty definitely lives up to it's name.

    Have a very Merry Christmas!

  6. Will you have certainly been a busy little elf Kevin :*) I am SO jealous of your Blue Ridge Beauty! I will make that one day - it's such a classic. And what can I say about your Soul Searching? OH MY!!!!! I could claim it you know, and everyone would believe it was mine with that black background LOL!!!!

Hope you and yours have the merriest of Christmases and a very prosperous 2015! Your photo of Valentino under the tree made me think of my sweet Gypsy. She loved Christmas trees and always slept under them when they were up. Give Valentino a few extra hugs and treats for me, okay? And hugs to you my friend!!!

  7. Wow Kevin you are doing a great job over there... keeping up with the mystery AND your scrappy rainbow challenges!

  8. Wow Kevin, you have been busy. I really like your modified stars, make more, make a larger quilt. Your GI units look so good all together, wonderful color choices!

  9. Merry Christmas, my friend!! You are just rockin' along with all the quilting!! Does Soul Searching need to be larger? I wouldn't put a border on it unless you half/quarter size the original blocks and keep on with the scrappy blocks!

  10. Wow! you have been a busy Man! I was gleeful to see your rainbowy goodness, I am a big fan of your work, but I just love the blue ridge Beauty. Is it made up of Jacob's ladder blocks? I have to look that particular pattern up. You have a very Merry Christmas!

(Oh I can't wait to see your finished Bonnie Quilt!)

  11. Kevin, busy, busy, busy as usual. If you weren't to make a border for the Kathy Doughty/Material obsession quilt top, it would be fine. Looks great as is. Don't you just love her and her quilts? I started correspondence with her to see if I can get her here as a speaker for our guild, but the correspondence just goes in fits and starts and nothing has been nailed down.

  12. Blue Ridge Beauty is on the top of my Bucket List! Actually, I did make it once in all scrappy fabrics....and I did the layout wrong, so it was a completely different quilt. LOL I want to do the CORRECT version. :) Great job on keep up with the mystery too! You've been busy!! Merry Christmas!

  13. Fabulous! Everything. From Soul Searching to Blue Ridge Beauty. Merriest of Christmases to you and yours.

  14. The older you get, the faster time flies. You must be getting old! Love all of your pictures, especially your "Soul Searching" top. Border?? Would a scrappy strip border in the opposite direction of the edge work? Merry Christmas!

  15. Kevin, You really have been a busy little elf. Everything you posted looks spectacular, wind and all. I especially like the BRB, Soul Searching and those great scrappy wonky stars. The pictures of the girls and Valentino are priceless. Makes me miss Lucky, but wasn't one who sat under the tree much, she tried to climb it!. Here's wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas, my friend and I look forward to more sewing, road trips and fabric organizing with you in the new year.

  16. I love your "Soul Searching" and your "Blue Ridge Beauty" quilt tops! I'm thinking of doing BRB in random scrappy colors. :)
Merry Christmas to you and your sweet fur-babies!

  17. Ho-ho-holee molee! You've been a busy guy with all this eye candy! Blue Ridge Beauty is just that, a beauty. Love the Soul Searching quilt, and the maverick stars are fantastic! I'm sure your Grand Illusion is going to be really cool. Congrats on gittin 'er done!

  18. Everything looks amazing. You are a piecing machine!. Have a great holiday.

  19. Merry Christmas!!!
Love the contrast of you grey neutral to your strong colors for GI - I can;t wait to see this put together. The modified maverick stars are so bright & pretty! The scrappiness makes then sparkle. The Blue Ridge Beauty is gorgeous. I recently put it on my 'eventually list' along with Lazy Sunday - both to be done with colors & fabrics already in the stash though. Valentino certainly gets into the holidays, doesn't he?! He is a very good kitty not to bother the wrapped gifts. Ours are only three years old and NOT to be trusted around something so enticing. Love the girls ears! I hope your holidays are merry & bright and involve some stitching time for you.

  20. Oh Kevin....I LOVE LOVE LOVE those Modified Maverick Stars! I've been struggling with deciding how to border "Dexter's Danimals" and I think you just inspired me to go with my original plan! I took a workshop with Bonnie in Amherst, NY several months back. "Crumb Piecing" and she taught those cute little Wonky Wishes. I was so hooked, I couldn't stop making them! I love seeing all you've been up to. You've come so far from when you started. :-)

  21. Wow, Kevin! Do you have to have a border on your Soul Searching? I really like it without one. It's gorgeous! Valentino is adorable there. Our black cat has a similar penchant for such perches. :)

  22. Wow! Holy moly child! This post is loaded with so much awesomeness, I'm not even sure to begin. For real.
I've always been a fan of Bonnie's Blue Ridge Beauty pattern, and yours turned out right up in the rankings :D
The two RSC quilts are looking Fab-u-lous! Soul Searching is a true beauty. Lovin' it.
Kudos to you for working on the GIMQ amidst all the other projects; still excited to see your color palette come together once she sends out the big reveal.

  23. Kevin, your Blue Ridge Beauty is gorgeous. Where did you get the pattern? Is it in one of her books? I've looked through the ones I have and didn't see it.
